Your Polpo address: connection ID and session password

What the 9-digit connection ID and the one-time session password in the Polpo Desk client are, how to share them and how to renew the password.

Last updated:

When you open the Polpo Desk client, you see two pieces of information: Your Connection ID and Session Password. Together we call them your Polpo address. The person providing support (the operator) uses them to connect to your computer.

Connection ID

The connection ID is a 9-digit number unique to your computer (e.g. 123 456 789). Our server assigns it the first time you run the client, and it stays the same for that computer; it doesn't change when you close and reopen the client.

  • The ID tells the operator which computer to connect to.
  • Knowing the ID alone is not enough to connect: a password or your approval is also required.
  • You can copy the ID to the clipboard with the copy button next to it and send it in a message.

Session password

The session password is a 6-digit password shown with the One-time label. Press the eye icon to reveal it, or the copy button to copy it to the clipboard.

  • A new password is generated every time the client starts and whenever it reconnects to the server.
  • When you press Renew Password, the old password stops working immediately.
  • Share the password only for the current support session; it is not a permanent access key.
Pressing Renew Password after a support session ends guarantees that the old password can't be used again.

How should I share these details?

  1. Open the client and wait until the status line at the bottom shows that it is ready (Ready to connect).
  2. Give Your Connection ID to the support agent, and the Session Password only if you know and trust them (by phone, message or email).
  3. If the operator connects without the password, an approval window opens on your screen: check the name and company of the person connecting and press Allow Connection. If the operator enters your valid session password, the session starts without asking for your approval.
The Polpo Desk team will never ask you for your ID and password unprompted. If someone you don't know calls and asks for these details, don't share them.

What does the status line tell me?

The status line at the bottom of the client shows the connection to the server. If it says Connecting… and the ID is shown as dashes (—), the client hasn't reached the server yet. In that case, try the steps in Client stuck on Connecting.

If you don't want to approve every time

To connect to your own computer or to servers you manage without approving each time, you can set a fixed password. See Setting up unattended access for details.
