Updating the Windows client

The Polpo Desk client checks for new versions by itself. Update with one click from the update card, or check manually in Settings.

The Polpo Desk client checks for new versions on its own and updates with a single click. You don't need to download a separate file and reinstall.

Polpo Desk and Polpo Desk Client

The steps in this article apply to both apps. Polpo Desk and Polpo Desk Client receive their updates separately and have different version numbers. An update doesn't change the app: Polpo Desk stays Polpo Desk, and the Client stays the Client.

To switch to the other app, download it from the Download page and open it. You are asked whether to install it in place of the app installed as a service on this computer; choose Yes. Your connection ID doesn't change.

Which version am I using?

Your version is shown in the bottom-right corner of the client window (e.g. v0.9.xx). Including this number when you open a support request makes our job easier.

Automatic check

The client checks our server for a new version when it starts and every few hours while it stays open. If there is a new version, a card appears in the bottom-right corner of the window: Version … is available.

One-click update

  1. Press the Update button on the card.
  2. The card first shows Downloading…, then Installing, restarting….
  3. If the client is installed as a service, Windows asks for administrator permission; choose Yes in the User Account Control window.
  4. The app closes and reopens with the new version. Your connection ID doesn't change.

If you don't want to update right now, press Later; the card closes and appears again at the next check.

Some versions may be marked as mandatory. In that case the card has no Later button, and you need to update to continue.
For your security, the downloaded update is not installed unless it is signed with the same certificate as the running program. Updates are downloaded only from the polpodesk.com server.

Checking manually

  1. Press the settings (gear) button at the top right of the client.
  2. On the General tab, find the Updates row.
  3. Press Check. The row shows Checking….

In Polpo Desk, this row is under Settings in the left menu: press Check.

Installed as a service vs. without installation

  • Installed as a service: The update replaces the program in C:\Program Files\Polpo Desk and the service, so administrator permission is required. The service is stopped briefly and restarted; an open session drops during this time.
  • Running without installation: The PolpoDesk.exe / PolpoDeskClient.exe file you run is replaced in place with the new one and the app reopens. You need write permission for the folder the file is in.

If the update fails

If the card shows Update failed, read the explanation below it and press Retry. Common causes:

  • Administrator permission was not granted: No was chosen in the UAC window. Try again and choose Yes.
  • Download failed: The internet connection dropped, or a firewall may be blocking the download.
  • The file could not be replaced (write permission may be required): When running without installation, the program is in a folder you can't write to. Move the file to one of your own folders, or install it as a service.
  • The update file's signature could not be verified: The downloaded file couldn't be verified, so it wasn't installed. Try again later; if the problem persists, open a support request.
The error details under Update failed are currently shown in Turkish (for example Yönetici izni verilmedi, İndirme başarısız). The list above gives their meaning in the same order.

If the connection works but the update says Could not reach the server, follow the steps in "Could not reach the server" when updating.

Technical details are written to the client's log file: %TEMP%\polpodesk-native.log. If our support team asks, you can share the update lines from this file.
